Institute of Fishery & Marine Science

The Institute of Fisheries and Marine Sciences provides quality higher education in Aquaculture, Capture Fisheries, Post-Harvest, Aquatic Resources and Ecology and Marine Sciences through two major courses in diploma, short course and training. These programs provide the leaners with the knowledge base, skill sets and hands-on experience to be highly competitive.

Somalia has a long coastline, which is rich in natural resources including fish and other resources.

Fisheries are one of the most significant resources, the fish provides nutrients and micronutrients that are essential to cognitive and physical development, especially children, and are important part of healthy diet.

Institute of fishery and marine science of Red sea University also puts a lot of efforts to trains Somali fisheries in order to improve their skills and make change their lifestyle.

Vision

To be the center of excellence for Fisheries and Marine Science and Technology Education and Research in Somalia, and to produce scholars to help the country’s economic development through sustainable development of fish and  other marine aquatic resources.

Main Activities of Institute

– The sea is full of fish.  According to FAO, the sustainable potential for fishery is approx. 200.000 tons per year. In 2013, local fishers caught less than 15.000 tons. The institute started training Somalia fisheries to increase the knowledge and achieve optimal utilization.

– Encourage fish consumption of Somali community thought practical training

– Enhance the skill of fisheries to reduce unemployment

– Piracy and criminality has been an issue along the coastline, and only by way can reduce is to direct people to utilize fishery and marine science by vocational training, short courses how to start SME commercial in fishery sector.
